The IRS figure is an optional business mileage rate from July 1, 2026. It is a tax benchmark, not a promise that your commute costs that much.

Cash cost versus the IRS mileage line

Fuel used is annual distance divided by fuel economy. In the U.S. that is miles and miles per gallon. In Canada and the rest of the metric list that is kilometres and litres per 100 km. Parking and tolls are per office day, then multiplied the same way. Add those three cash pieces. That is the main number.

The IRS optional business mileage rate is 76 cents a mile from July 1, 2026 (Announcement 2026-11). From January 1 through June 30, 2026 it was 72.5 cents. Jobert shows the July rate as a benchmark only on U.S. gallon setups. Many employees cannot deduct unreimbursed commute miles.

Pump prices come from public tables, not a paid station API. U.S. states use EIA weekly regular gasoline. If EIA has no weekly series for that state, the form uses the PADD regional average and says so. Canadian cities use Statistics Canada monthly self-serve prices. Other countries use OpenVan.camp weekly national averages (CC BY 4.0). A weekly job refreshes those tables when the sources publish a new week. You can type over any of those defaults. The form does not add wear, insurance, or the value of your time.

Worked examples on this page

Hybrid schedules change the total more than a two-mile difference in the drive. Parking often dwarfs fuel. The first row uses $3.50 a gallon so you can see the parking effect. The second row uses the baked EIA California weekly price. The third row is metric.

Why 48 weeks instead of 52?
Most people do not drive to the office every week of the year. 48 weeks leaves a little room for holidays and time off. Raise it to 52 if you want a full-year drive.
Is the IRS mileage number what I spend?
No. The 76 cent rate from July 1, 2026 is an optional business mileage figure. Your cash cost is fuel plus parking plus tolls. The IRS line is only a comparison.
Does this use live gas prices?
It fills a weekly average, then you can type over it. Type a city, state, or country to filter the fuel region list. U.S. figures are EIA weekly regular gasoline. Most states do not have their own EIA weekly series, so those use a PADD regional average. Canadian cities are Statistics Canada monthly averages. What about trains or remote days?
Transit passes are not in this form. Set office days to the days you actually drive. Remote days should be left out of that count.
